AdTag URL - on learn more action - Redirects to External Safari Browser - Need to lock orientation to Portrait Mode
We’re currently working on an OTT-based application where we integrate Google Ad Manager to serve video ads. As part of the ad experience, users often see a “Learn More” CTA (Call to Action) on these ads. As per our current requirement, when a user taps “Learn More” on an ad: • The link should open in Safari (i.e., an external browser) on iOS devices • The Safari browser should ideally open in portrait orientation, as the ad content and layout are optimised for portrait mode However, based on our understanding and technical constraints on iOS, it appears that: • Orientation control is restricted to the app’s own context. • Once Safari is launched via UIApplication.shared.open, we no longer have control over how it behaves in terms of orientation. • iOS system behaviour determines Safari’s orientation based on the device’s physical orientation and Safari’s own internal configuration. Could you please confirm if there’s any supported way (via SDK, deep link config, or otherwise) to enforce portrait orientation in Safari when opening such external URLs from within an iOS app? If this is not technically feasible, we would appreciate any best practices or alternatives you can suggest for ensuring a consistent user experience.

When will CSS animation-timeline hit Safari?
Hi all, Chrome has it already - animation-timeline aka scroll-animations. I can nowhere find any informations on what's the status in Safari/Webkit. Seems like they do not have it on the agenda at all? Does anyone know anything - I wanted to push a feature request for that - but also seem there is no feature request list anymore for webkit. See: https://www.w3.org/TR/scroll-animations/ Cheers and kind regards!

WKWebView/Sandbox Intermittent Local File Access Denial in macOS Sandbox Environment
Dear Apple Developer Experts, We're experiencing an intermittent issue with WKWebView in our macOS application where local HTML file access is occasionally denied by the sandbox, despite proper implementation and permissions. We seek your guidance in understanding and resolving this issue. Issue Description: The WKWebView occasionally fails to load local HTML files stored in the app's Contents/Resources directory Error occurs in WebKit Networking Process with sandbox denial Issue is intermittent and can be resolved by app restart or WebKit Networking Process restart Affects all local HTML files in the same directory once the issue occurs Technical Details: Error from Kernel Log: 2025-02-07 14:57:17.179821 +0800 kernel Sandbox: com.apple.WebKit.Networking(58661) deny(1) file-read-data /Applications/DingTalk.app/Contents/Resources/webcontent/contact-2024.html WKWebView Delegate Error (captured in WKNavigationDelegate method): (void)webView:(WKWebView *)webView didFailProvisionalNavigation:(WKNavigation *)navigation withError:(NSError *)error Error Details: Domain: NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code: 1 Description: "Operation not permitted" UserInfo: { networkTaskMetricsPrivacyStance: Unknown, _NSURLErrorFailingURLSessionTaskErrorKey: LocalDataTask <3694CA1E-481B-4E06-975D-E3A56AD56C0F>.<1>, _kCFStreamErrorDomainKey: 1, _kCFStreamErrorCodeKey: 1 } Key Observations: Error is captured in WKNavigationDelegate's didFailProvisionalNavigation method The issue affects all local HTML files in the same directory once it occurs Temporary workarounds we've discovered: Restarting the application completely resolves the issue Without restarting the application, terminating the "WebKit Networking Process" via Activity Monitor causes the process to automatically restart, and this resolves the issue and load works again Additional Information: We've collected complete system diagnostics (system_logs.logarchive) at the time of failure The issue appears similar to discussions in Apple Developer Forums (https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/110072), though we're uncertain if it's the same root cause We've prepared a minimal demo project demonstrating: Our release version app can be downloaded from: https://dtapp-pub.dingtalk.com/dingtalk-desktop/mac_dmg/Release/M1-Beta/DingTalk_v7.6.45_43521682_universal.dmg?spm=0.0.0.0.UuwovG&file=DingTalk_v7.6.45_43521682_universal.dmg for examining our app's codesign, sandbox, and entitlements configurations if needed Important Investigation Finding: We attempted to simulate the issue by using chmod 000 /path/to/test.html, but this produces a different error: CopyError Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1102 Description="You do not have permission to access the requested resource." UserInfo={ NSLocalizedDescription=You do not have permission to access the requested resource., NSErrorFailingURLStringKey=file:///Users/sunus/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData/WKWebViewLocalDemo-eumardnlfbmwgnhkaadglsrrhzhs/Build/Products/Debug/WKWebViewLocalDemo.app/Contents/Resources/test.html, NSUnderlyingError=0x600003aedc50 {Error Domain=kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork Code=-1102 "(null)"} } This error is distinctly different from our original issue's "Operation not permitted" error, suggesting that the sandbox denial we're experiencing is not a simple file permission issue. Questions: Is this a known issue with the WebKit sandbox in recent macOS versions? Are there recommended best practices or workarounds to prevent this sandbox denial? Could this be related to the WebKit Networking Process's sandbox configuration? Are there additional diagnostics or logs we should collect to help investigate this issue? We appreciate your assistance in investigating this issue. Please let us know if you need any additional information or clarification. STEPS TO REPRODUCE Open App Then loads the local file in /WKWebViewLocalDemo.app/Contents/Resources/test.html PS, We also submit a DTS & Feedback DTS:Case-ID: 11876957 Feedback-ID: FB16493282 sysdiagnose is in the Feedback-ID: FB16493282 is uploaded

Web Extension : browser.cookies.getAll() does not work
After upgrading to Safari version 18, we encountered an issue with my extension’s background script not being able to access cookies. Previously, in Safari versions 17 and below, the extension worked as expected. Now, when the extension tries to retrieve cookies using browser.cookies.getAll(), it returns an empty list. However, if we open the extension’s developer tools, the cookies are visible and accessible. It seems that Safari only provides cookie data after the developer tools have been opened. However, after relaunching Safari and launching the extension without opening the developer tools, browser.cookies.getAll() still returns an empty list. Has anyone else experienced this? STEPS TO REPRODUCE Download this minimal app : https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0bajlhnuQaG6T5NsFKXEB0U9Q#test%5Fcookies Compile test_mv2 extension (in test_cookies.getAll.zip). Launch test_mv2.app and activate extension. Click on the extension's button (browserAction). Open the developer tools. Observe an empty list of cookies. Click on the extension's button (browserAction). Cookies are retrieved as expected.

The bottom tab bar appears after using the keypad in OS26.
hi Testing on OS26 Public Beta 6. In Safari, if you enter x homepage and scroll, the tab bar sticks to the bottom and moves. Make the keyboard appear in the search window When scrolling down on the Safari homepage again, the issue of not being able to stick to the bottom appears. Is it because the liquid glass UI was applied this time? and safari bug? Please let me know if I'm missing anything

Safari Web Extension checkbox missing or not persistent in Safari 26.0.1 on macOS 15.7
I’m observing an intermittent issue with a Safari Web Extension on macOS 15.7 (Safari 26.0.1). After installing the Safari extension from the App Store, it appears under Settings → Extensions, but the enable checkbox is often missing. Sometimes, after restarting Safari multiple times, the checkbox becomes visible. However, even when I manage to enable the extension, reopening Safari often hides the checkbox again. However, I don't see this issue in safari 26 with macOS 26 I’d like to know if this behavior is a known issue with Safari 26 or macOS 15.7? Any workaround available?

iOS 26/MacOS 26 - PWA App Icons: Dark,Clear,Tinted Appearance
Hi everyone, I'm exploring the new app icon appearance options (Clear, Dark, Tinted) for Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) on iOS26, iPadOS26, and macOS26. Currently, PWA icons don't seem to render well with these new appearances, particularly in Clear and Tinted modes, resulting in very very poor visual quality. You can hardly see anything. Has support for these icon appearances been fully implemented for PWAs? If so, could someone point me to the relevant Apple Developer documentation or provide guidance on how to configure PWA icons to support Clear, Dark, and Tinted appearances? I've searched the Apple Developer Forums, Stack Overflow, and Reddit but haven't found clear information on this topic.A possible solution is a png file with transparent areas, but if the pattern is dark, nothing will be visible in dark mode. Any insights or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! (plz don't give up on PWA😭) Reference: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/761615 https://stackoverflow.com/questions/78780916/is-there-a-way-to-provide-light-dark-and-tinted-variants-of-apple-touch-icon https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWebContent/ConfiguringWebApplications/ConfiguringWebApplications.html

iOS Safari 18.4/18.5 with IIS Windows Authentication with negotiate hangs after entering credentials
I don't think the issue is specific iOS 18. We have a web application that runs with IIS Authentication of Windows and Anonymous. Initially the app opens and the user clicks a button and triggers the "401 Challenge" via ASP.NET. The browser presents the Active Directory login, user enters credentials, clicks Sign In, and the browser hangs (may actually be negotiating something). After a few minutes the user is logged into the application. We have done a number of google searches/AI to try to determine what to change and there is no clear solution. Is there anything else to try? This problem is not seen in Chrome on iOS or on a Windows machine. Strangely it is also not seen using BrowserStack with one of their "real" devices. We have other apps that run with just Windows Authorization and this problem is not observed.

Declarative Net Request rules are getting added to the redirect calls
I am creating a Safari Web Extension. There are two calls let say, call1 and call2 which gets executed in sequence by browser, call1 gives a 302 type response and redirects to call2. When creating DNR rule for adding "Cookie" in the request header of call1, the same cookie gets added to the request header of call2 as well(Same is the case for other headers/custom headers as-well). Because of this the set-cookie present in response header of call1 is not sent in the request header of call2, and returns 400 response. The same setting is working fine for other browsers chrome & firefox. Is this a bug or DNR works differently for safari ? currently "webRequestBlocking" works in safari for manifest v3, is there any development of it getting removed just like it's removed in chrome in mv3.

PWA video playback stopped working after updating iOS to 26.0.1
Hey Guys My PWA video playback and even youtube videos stopped working after updating iOS to 26.0.1. The video thumnails appear fine and if i try to play the video, it remains stuck. If i restart the phone, the video plays for a second in the PWA and then stops again and entire app gets stuck. Request apple team to fix this issue at the earliest. This is hampering all my iOS users who install the PWA on their device homescreen and use it as app. FYI strangely EVERYTHING WORKS FINE ON iOS SAFARI browser including videos playback If i open it as a web app. so this seems like a specific PWA issue on latest ios 26.0.1

A single TS file is downloaded repeatedly in Safari on iOS 18.4 and iOS 18.5
Our team has implemented a video player using the HTML5 tag, but we have identified an issue with loading media files. While Safari on iOS 18.0 downloads each TS file listed in the m3u8 playlist correctly, on iOS 18.4 and 18.5, a single TS file is downloaded repeatedly. Our statistics indicate that approximately six requests are made per second for the same TS file. Is this intended behavior? If not, are there any known workaround or solutions? If this issue is due to the OS or browser, are there any plans to address it in iOS 18.6 or a future release? Could you advise on the proper channel to submit a bug report for this issue? Similar issues have been reported in the past with WKWebView. The previous thread is here: https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/784134

Concerning recent trend of start page bugs on Safari
Summary Recently a number of bugs affecting our Safari extension have been introduced with various Safari 18.X updates. We've submitted feedback for all of these, but most have received no response. We need to raise this to your attention as it has been affecting our developer experience and causing a lot of frustration for our users. It's something that adds a lot of uncertainty for us. These issues affect core web functionalities but seem to be isolated to the Start Page or Extension environments. For example: using window.open, no longer works using window.location.href = ... no longer works Including a tag in our start page causes infinite reloading to occur. registering a content script more than once will crash Safari Details Unable to open new window as as start page extension in Safari 18 FB15879470 What happens: Calling window.open does nothing. This broke our links to our feedback submission, marketing site & help site. When: Nov 18, 2024 - Initial launch of Safari 18 on macOS Status: Open, No response Unable to open app url scheme with window.location.href in start page extension in iOS 18 FB15879596 What happens: Changing the URL in this way does nothing (well actually it does work about 10% of the time). This broke our navigation to in app payment. When: Nov 18, 2024 - Initial launch of Safari 18 on iOS Status: Open, No response New tab extensions broken FB16126043 What happens: Having a tag in your causes an infinite loop of reloading the start page. This broke our entire start page extension. When: Dec 19, 2024 - Safari 18.3 on iOS beta Status: 10 similar tickets found, marked for future OS update. We did get a response and a fix is identified for a future release window.open opens “about:blank” when called from Start Page extension. FB16427985 What happens: calling window.open from the start page opens about blank on iOS 18.3. Similar to the first issue, but slightly different behaviour. This broke our links to our feedback submission, marketing site & help site. When: Jan 30, 2025 - Safari 18.3 Status: Open, No response Registering a content script more than once causes Safari to crash in macOS 15.4 beta FB16831768 What happens: We have an optional content script that we were registering every time it was used. Although somewhat redundant, it was much simpler than checking if one was already registered and tracking if an updated one needed to replace it. This works fine on all other browsers and all prior Safari versions we've released it on. However if a user enables site blocker on the latest version, as soon as they visit any website, our content script registration causes Safari to crash. Essentially preventing users from using Safari until they uninstall our extension. When: Mar 11, 2025 - Safari 18.4 Status: Open, No response In Conclusion Luckily we have been able to isolate and find workarounds for most of these issues so far, but we are not guaranteed to in the future. We are raising this not only to have these issues looked into, but to raise awareness of the rising trend of basic functionality of Safari extensions breaking with Safari updates. We hope that this can influence a shift in your QA & feedback intake practices to ensure these issues are less frequent in the future. We are happy to raise future issues through your provided channels as they are discovered. But to have our feedback ignored and then have to rely solely on workarounds to prevent disruptions to our users' experience is concerning. We submitted this feedback to our developer relations contact, and he suggested we submit a TSI to look into these issues. In response to this, we were advised to post this here.

Apple Sign In - Double prompt issue
Hi, we have PWA for which we´ve built a wrapper using PWA Builder tool and we are experiencing an issue with apple sign in. When we try to redirect the user to "https://appleid.apple.com/auth/authorize?...params...", a bottom sheet login prompt appears and only once the user signs in using the prompt he is then redirected to the url where he needs to sign in again and then we get the callback. We want to get rid of that bottom sheet prompt. The code we´ve tried: ` iosButton.addEventListener('click', function () { window.location.href = "https://appleid.apple.com/auth/authorize?client_id=xxxxx&redirect_uri=xxxxx&response_type=code%20id_token&scope=name%20email&response_mode=form_post"; });` The alternative code we´ve tried for which it seems that nothing happens, we only see the "Started" alert, we´ve confirmed that there is no other error : ` <script src="https://appleid.cdn-apple.com/appleauth/static/jsapi/appleid/1/en_US/appleid.auth.js"></script> <script> (function initAppleSignIn() { try { window.AppleID.auth.init({ clientId: "{{ env('APPLE_WEB_CLIENT_ID') }}", scope: "name email", redirectURI: window.location.origin +"/auth/apple/callback", usePopup: true }); } catch (e) { console.warn('Apple Sign-In init skipped:', e); } })(); function appleButtonClicked() { alert("Started"); try { const res = await window.AppleID.auth.signIn(); } catch (err) { alert("Got error"); } alert("Got here"); } </script>

Can’t Debug background.js in Safari App Extension (Manifest V3)
I’m developing a Safari App Extension and I want to debug the background.js script. However, I can’t find any tool or option to do this. When I run the extension from Xcode using the ProjectName Extension (macOS) scheme, I expect to see a “ProjectName” item under the Develop → Web Extension Background Content menu. But there’s nothing there. Has anyone encountered the same issue? How did you fix it? Environment: Manifest Version: V3 Safari: 26.0.1 (21622.1.22.11.15) Xcode: 26.0.1 (17A400)

WKWebView Persistent 1st-Party Cookie Deletion: Automatic Removal Policies in iOS/Safari
Our current iOS application utilizes WKWebView to display a web application. We've observed intermittent deletion of non-expired 1st-party persistent cookies within this web application, leading to session drops. Here are our environment details and specific questions: Environment: App Build: Built with Xcode 16.2. WebView Class: WKWebView. Cookie Type: 1st-Party Persistent Cookie (Explicit expiration set, not a session cookie). Domain Configuration: The content server and the cookie-issuing server are the same (same IP address, same eTLD+1). The Cookie is set via the Set-Cookie HTTP Header on the server side. Questions: Automatic Deletion Policy: Are there any scenarios (e.g., related to iOS system behavior, Safari policies, or Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP)) where iOS or Safari might automatically delete non-expired 1st-party persistent cookies used by WKWebView? Deletion Conditions: If the answer to Q1 is Yes, under what specific conditions (e.g., memory pressure, inactivity, storage limits, specific ITP criteria) does this cookie deletion occur, and does the behavior differ significantly across various iOS versions? OS Update Impact: Are there any known specifications or documented cases where an iOS version update itself triggers the mass deletion of existing cookies stored in the WKWebsiteDataStore? Mitigation Strategy: If this automatic deletion is a known behavior, what mitigation strategies are officially recommended to ensure the persistence of essential 1st-party authentication cookies (e.g., manual synchronization with WKHTTPCookieStore or Keychain/UserDefaults)? Official Documentation: If the answer to Q1 is Yes, please provide URLs to any official Apple documentation or technical notes that detail the specifications or behavior of 1st-party persistent cookie deletion within WKWebView.

iOS 26 WKWebView PDF Background Color Changed to Gray
Hello We've encountered an issue with WKWebView in the latest iOS 26 beta. When loading a PDF URL, the background of the PDF viewer now displays as a dark gray instead of the expected white. Device: iOS 26 Simulator/Device Component: WKWebView Issue: The background color of the loaded PDF is gray. Expected Behavior: The background should be white, as it has been in all previous iOS versions. Link for Testing: https://help.apple.com/pdf/security/en_US/apple-platform-security-guide.pdf We confirmed that the same PDF and code render with a white background on iOS 26 and earlier. Questions: Is this an intentional change in iOS 26's WKWebView? If so, is there a new property or configuration setting available to control the background color of the PDF viewer within WKWebView? We would like to have the ability to set it back to white. Any insights, workarounds, or information on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Safari crashes
Ever since the iOS and iPadOS 26.2 beta I can’t open Safari at all. Safari tries to open but crashes and goes back to my home screen. I’ve restored my devices and restarted everything and the same issue occurs. I didn’t have this problem on the beta 26.1 but this whole thing started on 26.2.

Referer not being sent by WKWebView when using a custom scheme
YouTube now requires a Referer to be sent to be able to embed Youtube videos, otherwise the videos won't work. But WKWebView doesn't send a Referer when using a custom scheme, so Youtube videos stopped working in that case. This affects Ionic apps, both using Cordova or Capacitor. There's an open issue for Cordova and another one for Capacitor. In these apps, the app is served using a custom scheme like capacitor://localhost or ionic://localhost. I tried modifying the Ionic WebView source code to force adding a referrer to the URL loaded using WKWebView's loadRequest: [request addValue:@"https://my.test.app" forHTTPHeaderField:@"Referer"]; [_engineWebView loadRequest:request] But the Referer is still not sent in the Requests, I guess because the app is using a custom scheme (e.g. capacitor://localhost). However, if I modify this code to force loading an "online URL" (using https) instead of capacitor://localhost, then the my.test.app Referer is sent to the requests. Is there any way to make WKWebView send a Referer when using a custom scheme?

WKWebView crashes in SSO App Extension on iOS 26 during loadRequest
We have a SAML-based SSO App Extension that uses WKWebView to load the SAML login request. This implementation has been working correctly on iOS versions prior to 26. However, starting with iOS 26, the extension consistently crashes when calling WKWebView.load(_:). The crash occurs inside WebKit, specifically in: /Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/WebKit/Source/WebKit/UIProcess/WebsiteData/WebsiteDataStore.cpp at WebKit::WebPageProxy::loadRequest(...) No app-level exception is thrown, and the extension terminates with: Thread 10: EXC_BREAKPOINT (code=1, subcode=0x1a31dbe00) It appears that WKWebView initialization or WebsiteDataStore creation is now restricted in extension contexts on iOS 26, but this change is not documented in the SDK release notes. Could you please confirm if this is an intentional sandbox restriction in iOS 26 or a regression in WebKit? Steps to reproduce: Implement an App Extension using ASAuthorizationProviderExtensionAuthorizationRequest. Create a WKWebView instance in the extension. Attempt to load a SAML login request (POST request with headers). Observe immediate crash on iOS 26 (works fine on earlier versions). Expected behavior: WKWebView should load the request or fail gracefully as in prior releases, without crashing the extension process. Request: Please clarify if WKWebView usage inside extensions is officially unsupported as of iOS 26, and if so, recommend an alternative approach for handling SSO flows.
