Subscription permission denied on webapp push
HI, please can someone help? I have a web app where push notifications are in place for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Providing the user allows notifications then when they log in for the first time their details are registered to the subscriptions table in the backend. All good so far. When trying to do the same with Safari on Mac I'm faced with this issue: "Safari doesn’t support invisible push notifications. Present push notifications to the user immediately after your service worker receives them. If you don’t, Safari revokes the push notification permission for your site." and the user is not registered in the subscription table with the Safari console just saying variations of this: [Warning] Notification permission denied. (notifications_frontend.js, line 177, x2) [Log] Enable Notifications button clicked (notifications_frontend.js, line 245) [Log] Safari Push Notifications detected (notifications_frontend.js, line 248) [Warning] Safari Push Permission denied. (notifications_frontend.js, line 278) I've found this on an another forrum: "Safari requires that you immediately post a notification when a push message is received. "Immediately" means that it cannot be after some async operation. If you display a notification immediately from the service worker itself, it will stop displaying that error. I cannot remember 100% but I think if you clear your cache and cookies you will be able to receive push messages again if you accidentally get blocked while testing." and I've tried adding buttons to trigger allowing notifications but it all seem to late to get the subscription registered in the subscription table. I'm pretty new to coding so if any has a similar experience and can advice how to get the subscriptions registered when the user logs on for the first time in Safari in a Mac it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Your browser preventing this app to open “URL”
Hi Apple developers, I am very new to XCode and Swift, I am planning to build an app for iOS from a web. I tried to use WKWebView to handle the web , I managed to redirect some of the links to Safari, however some button/links didn't trigger .linkActivated function and encounter the error as "Your browser preventing this app to open “URL”. If I copy the URL to Safari is able to open, I trying to research on web but can't find any related solution for my case. Here is the code in my app: import UIKit import WebKit import SafariServices class ViewController: UIViewController, WKNavigationDelegate { var webView: WKWebView! override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() // Initialize WKWebView let webConfiguration = WKWebViewConfiguration() //enable javascript webConfiguration.preferences.javaScriptEnabled = true webView = WKWebView(frame: self.view.frame, configuration: webConfiguration) webView.navigationDelegate = self self.view.addSubview(webView) // Load a web page as webview if let url = URL(string: "https://myurl") { let request = URLRequest(url: url) webView.load(request) } //console log webView.evaluateJavaScript("console.log('Button clicked!')") { result, error in if let error = error { print("Error executing JavaScript: \(error.localizedDescription)") } else { print("JavaScript result: \(String(describing: result))") } } } func webView(_ webView: WKWebView, decidePolicyFor navigationAction: WKNavigationAction, decisionHandler: @escaping (WKNavigationActionPolicy) -> Void) { if let url = navigationAction.request.url, navigationAction.navigationType == .linkActivated { // Check if URL is external and open it in Safari if UIApplication.shared.canOpenURL(url) { UIApplication.shared.open(url, options: [:], completionHandler: nil) decisionHandler(.cancel) // Prevent loading the link in the WebView } else { decisionHandler(.allow) // Allow loading if URL cannot be opened in Safari } } else { decisionHandler(.allow) // Allow the WebView to load the URL normally } } }

Safari App Extension – conflicting Bundle Identifier
Sometimes the Safari App Extension i'm developing does not show up in my Safari Extensions unless i change mu bundle identifier to some unique name. Even if I delete all other apps i've built with the same (and different) bundle ID, the extension is still does not show up. The only solution for me is to always change the bundle ID. For example: Now it is "kopyl.tab-finder-10" If i change it to "kopyl.tab-finder-11", the extension does show up in the Safari extensions settings page again. Is there any other way to fix it?

Unable to Launch Safari Driver
I am encountering an issue where we are unable to run or launch Safari Driver in our automation tests using macOS. When attempting to run safaridriver -p 8888 from the terminal, we receive the following error message: ERROR: safaridriver could not launch because it is not configured correctly or you need to authenticate. Re-run safaridriver(1) and pass the '--enable' flag to configure and/or authenticate. For more information, consult the safaridriver(1) man page. Despite running sudo safaridriver --enable as an administrator (even as root), the issue persists. I’ve searched through various online forums and GitHub repositories but couldn’t find a working solution. Some references are: Apple Developer Forum Thread: https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/762321 GitHub Issue: https://github.com/SeleniumHQ/selenium/issues/11381

Priority of Declarative Net Request rules not respected on Safari
A DNR rule with lower priority is being applied before a DNR rule of higher priority on Safari. Specifically, a low-priority DNR block rule that matches a request is being applied before a high-priority DNR redirect rule that matches the same request, preventing the redirect from occurring. The only way to get the high-priority redirect rule to occur is to remove the DNR block rule. This does not occur on other browsers. I have already submitted a Feedback Assistant report about this bug: FB16535579 How to reproduce: Create/install a web extension on Safari with the declarativeNetRequest and declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess permissions Open the Web Extension Background Content console and add a redirect rule with a high priority number. For example: await chrome.declarativeNetRequest.updateDynamicRules({addRules: [ {id: 5000, condition: {urlFilter: "||www.google-analytics.com*/ga.js", resourceTypes: ["script"], domainType: "thirdParty"}, priority: 80, action: {type: "redirect", redirect: {url: “http://www.apple.com/”}}} ]}) Add a block rule of lower priority for the same urlFilter: await chrome.declarativeNetRequest.updateDynamicRules({addRules: [ {id: 5001, condition: {urlFilter: "||www.google-analytics.com^", domainType: "thirdParty"}, priority: 1, action: {type: "block"}} ]}) Visit https://efforg.github.io/privacybadger-test-fixtures/html/ga_surrogate.html Check the network tab and see that neither a request to Google Analytics nor apple.com appear. This means that the request to Google Analytics was blocked instead of being / before being redirected Remove the block rule: await chrome.declarativeNetRequest.updateDynamicRules({removeRuleIds: [5001]}) Reload https://efforg.github.io/privacybadger-test-fixtures/html/ga_surrogate.html. Check the network tab and confirm that there is a request to apple.com, showing that the redirect rule is only applied if the lower-priority block rule is removed. The priority of the DNR rules should handle this without having to remove a DNR rule. I have confirmed that the incorrect application of DNR rule priority happens on other top level domains, with other urlFilters, and with other redirect URLs. I confirmed that this is happening while I’ve granted my extension permissions on all websites.

iOS Mobile Video Audio Playback Issues in React
I'm experiencing issues with audio playback in my React video player component specifically on iOS mobile devices (iPhone/iPad). Even after implementing several recommended solutions, including Apple's own guidelines, the audio still isn't working properly on iOS Safari. It works completely fine on Android. On iOS, I ensured the video doesn't autoplay (it requires user interaction). Here are all the details: Environment iOS Safari (latest version) React 18 TypeScript Video files: MP4 with AAC audio codec Current Implementation const VideoPlayer: React.FC<VideoPlayerProps> = ({ src, autoplay = true, }) => { const videoRef = useRef<HTMLVideoElement>(null); const isIOSDevice = isIOS(); // Custom iOS detection const [touchStartY, setTouchStartY] = useState<number | null>(null); const [touchStartTime, setTouchStartTime] = useState<number | null>(null); // Handle touch start event for gesture detection const handleTouchStart = (e: React.TouchEvent) => { setTouchStartY(e.touches[0].clientY); setTouchStartTime(Date.now()); }; // Handle touch end event with gesture validation const handleTouchEnd = (e: React.TouchEvent) => { if (touchStartY === null || touchStartTime === null) return; const touchEndY = e.changedTouches[0].clientY; const touchEndTime = Date.now(); // Validate if it's a legitimate tap (not a scroll) const verticalDistance = Math.abs(touchEndY - touchStartY); const touchDuration = touchEndTime - touchStartTime; // Only trigger for quick taps (< 200ms) with minimal vertical movement if (touchDuration < 200 && verticalDistance < 10) { handleVideoInteraction(e); } setTouchStartY(null); setTouchStartTime(null); }; // Simplified video interaction handler following Apple's guidelines const handleVideoInteraction = (e: React.MouseEvent | React.TouchEvent) => { console.log('Video interaction detected:', { type: e.type, timestamp: new Date().toISOString() }); // Ensure keyboard is dismissed (iOS requirement) if (document.activeElement instanceof HTMLElement) { document.activeElement.blur(); } e.stopPropagation(); const video = videoRef.current; if (!video || !video.paused) return; // Attempt playback in response to user gesture video.play().catch(err => console.error('Error playing video:', err)); }; // Effect to handle video source and initial state useEffect(() => { console.log('VideoPlayer props:', { src, loadingState }); setError(null); setLoadingState('initial'); setShowPlayButton(false); // Never show custom play button on iOS if (videoRef.current) { // Set crossOrigin attribute for CORS videoRef.current.crossOrigin = "anonymous"; if (autoplay && !hasPlayed && !isIOSDevice) { // Only autoplay on non-iOS devices dismissKeyboard(); setHasPlayed(true); } } }, [src, autoplay, hasPlayed, isIOSDevice]); return ( <Paper shadow="sm" radius="md" withBorder onClick={handleVideoInteraction} onTouchStart={handleTouchStart} onTouchEnd={handleTouchEnd} > <video ref={videoRef} autoPlay={!isIOSDevice && autoplay} playsInline controls crossOrigin="anonymous" preload="auto" onLoadedData={handleLoadedData} onLoadedMetadata={handleMetadataLoaded} onEnded={handleVideoEnd} onError={handleError} onPlay={dismissKeyboard} onClick={handleVideoInteraction} onTouchStart={handleTouchStart} onTouchEnd={handleTouchEnd} {...(!isFirefoxBrowser && { "x-webkit-airplay": "allow", "x-webkit-playsinline": true, "webkit-playsinline": true })} > <source src={videoSrc} type="video/mp4" /> </video> </Paper> ); }; Apple's Guidelines Implementation Removed custom play controls on iOS Using native video controls for user interaction Ensuring audio playback is triggered by user gesture Following Apple's audio session guidelines Properly handling the canplaythrough event Current Behavior Video plays but without sound on iOS mobile Mute/unmute button in native video controls doesn't work Audio works fine on desktop browsers and Android devices Videos are confirmed to have AAC audio codec No console errors related to audio playback User interaction doesn't trigger audio as expected Questions Are there any additional iOS-specific requirements I'm missing? Could this be related to iOS audio session handling? Are there known issues with React's handling of video elements on iOS? Should I be implementing additional audio context initialization? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Inquiry about WebRTC camera access when using Chrome browser and WKWebView API on iPadOS
We are Java application developers and we have a question regarding camera access via WebRTC on iPadOS. Specifically, on iPadOS 17.1, we are encountering an issue when trying to access the camera via the WKWebView API in the Chrome browser, where an error occurs and the camera capture fails. Our investigation suggests that device access through the navigator.mediaDevices property via the WKWebView API may not work in Chrome. However, it works as expected in the Safari browser, leading us to wonder if this is a Chrome-specific limitation, or if it's due to an iPadOS setting or specification. At this point, we are unsure if this issue is related to the WKWebView and WebRTC specifications on iPadOS 17.1, or if there are specific limitations in Chrome. We would appreciate any insights or solutions regarding camera access in iPadOS 17.1 with WKWebView and WebRTC, especially in relation to Chrome.

How to prevent text wrapping in iOS browser's default option tag?
In the Safari browser on mobile devices, the tags in an HTML element are styled with the system's default styles. I want the text inside the tags to be displayed without line breaks. However, in reality, the text wraps according to its length. May I ask if there are any methods to achieve this? (ps: CSS-related properties such as white-space: nowrap do not work.)

Local storage/db of WKWebView in App Clips and installed Apps
Hello, I am studying a possible scenario. Let's say I create an App Clip that features a WKWebView. The WKWebView hosts a sort of webapp that uses local storage and IndexDB. When the complete app is installed, are the data persisted so the WKWebView of the complete app finds them as it was reading them before? Are the data transferred by the operating system to a new location but still accessed the same way by the WKWebView (Or even the location is the same because it is the WKWebView special storage)? Or are they wiped out? Thank you in advance Best regards

Issue with iOS Safari Handling Updates in .ics Files
I have an endpoint that generates a .ics file. From my mobile app, I open the browser (Safari) and retrieve the .ics file. In Safari, the events are displayed as expected, and I can use the "Add All" button to add them to the calendar. After clicking "Add All," I can select the desired calendar, and the events are successfully added (see screenshots 1 and 2 below). Here’s the initial .ics file response: BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 CALSCALE:GREGORIAN PRODID:NAME BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTAMP:20250101T195917Z DTSTART:20250102T131600 DTEND:20250102T142500 SUMMARY:My Event 1 UID:unique-uid1 LAST-MODIFIED:20250101T155715Z DESCRIPTION:Description SEQUENCE:1 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTAMP:20250101T195917Z DTSTART:20250103T131600 DTEND:20250103T135600 SUMMARY:My Event 2 UID:unique-uid2 LAST-MODIFIED:20250101T155715Z DESCRIPTION:Description SEQUENCE:1 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR Later, I updated the .ics file with new event details: BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 CALSCALE:GREGORIAN PRODID:NAME BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTAMP:20250102T195917Z DTSTART:20250104T131600 DTEND:20250104T142500 SUMMARY:My Event 1 Update UID:unique-uid1 LAST-MODIFIED:20250104T155715Z DESCRIPTION:Description SEQUENCE:2 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTAMP:20250102T195917Z DTSTART:20250105T131600 DTEND:20250105T142500 SUMMARY:My Event 2 Update UID:unique-uid2 LAST-MODIFIED:20250102T155715Z DESCRIPTION:Description SEQUENCE:2 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR I updated everything according to the iCalendar documentation: UID remained unchanged SEQUENCE has been updated DTSTAMP has been updated LAST-MODIFIED has been updated However it seems like that Safari can't handle updates on events. In the preview we can see the changes, but when I click on "Add All" button, nothing happens. The same behavior is working with other calendars like Outlook (web view) or Google Calendar. My Questions: Is there a property missing from my .ics file that is necessary for iOS Safari to handle updates? Is Safari not designed to handle event updates in this way? Should I consider moving to a subscription-based solution to manage updates more reliably? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Are my 3d stereo Mars images working fine on Vision Pro? (HEIC format created from 2 JPEGs)
I'm currently experimenting to add 3d stereo images in HEIC format to my daily Mars Rover Images website https://areo.info/mars20 which can be opened on a Vision Pro. Only a few images are yet converted into that mode, those on the sol 1411 page. As I'm currently only working in the Vision Pro Simulator from Xcode, no real 3d effect if of course visible and I'm curious if anyone using the real hardware can confirm that the images are working. Especially the eye distance correction is important to know about as the Mars Rover camera has a much wider pupil distance than humans and while I entered that distance in the conversion tool, I'm not sure if it worked well. So feedback is welcome! For those who like to try to create stereo images themselves: I used https://developer.apple.com/documentation/ImageIO/writing-spatial-photos to create a HEIC file from two JPEGs.

Embedded Power BI reports crashes in mobile layout using iOS
We're embedding the Power BI reports into our portal by using JS library. While testing them, we found that mobile layout of the reports don't work as we expect on iOS devices (tested in Chrome and Safari). There are two principals issues: 1) the site is automatically refreshed when the users filter the data (we reduced them to lower expression) and 2) the site also crashes after a while using the dashboard by applying different filters.

Redirecting to an app's universal link from and app extension popup
I have a simple Safari extension for iOS. In its popup, I want a button that will open the app via a universal link. I have this kind-of working, except that Safari opens the actual online destination of the link with a banner at the top saying "Open in the XXXX app" and an OPEN button. What do I have to do to go directly to the app? More generally, I know that if I copy-and-paste a universal link into the Safari address bar, Safari does the same thing - but it does go directly to the app from an <a href="...."> link. In my app extension JavaScript, I set window.location. Presumably this is too similar to pasting into the address bar. Is there some alternative to setting window.location that is more like clicking on a link and will go directly to the universal link's app? Thanks.

Safari 18: Storage location for open windows and tabs
I want to write an app, that lets users restore all oben windows and tabs from any given point in a TimeMachine backup. The store location seems to have changed. In earlier versions it was possible to restore the open windows and tabs by retrieving /Users/[UserName]/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/SafariTabs.db …/SafariTabs.db-shm …/SafariTabs.db-wal As of 18.3 this doesn’t work any more, even though these files get updated with the use of Safari What else would I need to retrieve from a back up disk? Thank you very much for any hints!

WKWebView Entitlements
Hi all, I'm developing an application that uses WKWebView to display a web application which I augment with iOS native utilities such as Speech to Text and IAP. The application also uses Service workers, so we define AppBound Domains in the info.plist file. Everything works for this, but when we deploy on a device the application will crash and say we need these entitlements com.apple.developer.web-browser-engine.networking, com.apple.developer.web-browser-engine.rendering, com.apple.developer.web-browser-engine.webcontent, com.apple.runningboard.assertions.webkit From what I can see, we do need all of them. However Apple suggest submitting a request to be an Altnerative Browser (https://developer.apple.com/support/alternative-browser-engines) This is not appropriate for the application in my view since one requirement of being an alternative browser is that you don't modify the resources on the web site - we of course do since we inject javascript in order to bridge between iOS and the contents of the webview. How are people navigating this issue? I assumed it would be common given the use of Tauri etc. to build similar types of applications, but I don't see much about it. Thank you!
