Safari 18: Storage location for open windows and tabs
I want to write an app, that lets users restore all oben windows and tabs from any given point in a TimeMachine backup. The store location seems to have changed. In earlier versions it was possible to restore the open windows and tabs by retrieving /Users/[UserName]/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/SafariTabs.db …/SafariTabs.db-shm …/SafariTabs.db-wal As of 18.3 this doesn’t work any more, even though these files get updated with the use of Safari What else would I need to retrieve from a back up disk? Thank you very much for any hints!

Animated AVIF Playback Inconsistency on Safari Across iPhone Models
Animated AVIFs don't work properly on Safari, with inconsistent behavior across iPhone models. On iPhone 14 Pro (A16, iOS 18.3.1), playback works fine, but on iPhone 15 (A16, iOS 18.3.1), it shows as a still image. iPhone 16 Pro (A18, iOS 18.4 beta) plays correctly, and M1 Pro MacBook handles it well too. Oddly, Xcode simulator (M1 Pro) only plays a specific file on iPhone 14 Pro. Is this tied to AV1 decoding differences (hardware vs. software) or a WebKit rendering issue? Any insights or documentation would help! Note: The tested images are commercial files, so I can’t attach them here, but I’m happy to share those upon request.

DNR Redirect Rule Won’t Redirect to Extension Path
DNR rules redirecting to an extension path lead to an error page: “Safari can’t open the page. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1008.)” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1,008).” Here is a demo extension that replicates the bug: https://github.com/lenacohen/Safari-Test-Extensions/tree/main/dnr-extension-path-redirect This is an example of a redirect rule that leads to an error page instead of the extension path page: chrome.declarativeNetRequest.updateDynamicRules({addRules: [ { id: 2, priority: 1, action: { type: "redirect", redirect: { extensionPath: "/web_accessible_resources/test_redirect.html" } }, condition: { urlFilter: "||washingtonpost.com^", resourceTypes: [ "main_frame" ] } } ]}); The extension path is included in web_accessible_resources in the extension manifest: "web_accessible_resources": [{ "resources": [ "web_accessible_resources/test_redirect.html" ], I also submitted a bug report on Apple's Feedback Assistant: FB16607632

crossorigin="anonymous" Prevents Rendering and Canvas Access for Custom Scheme and HTTP Images on iOS 18
On iOS 18, when setting the src attribute of an tag to a custom scheme (e.g., myapp://image.png) or an HTTP URL (http://example.com/image.png), if crossorigin="anonymous" is applied, the image fails to load. Additionally, images affected by this issue cannot be drawn to a , as the browser treats them as tainted and blocks access to their pixel data. This issue did not occur in previous iOS versions and seems to be a regression in iOS 18. Steps to Reproduce: Open an HTTPS-hosted H5 page in Safari on iOS 18. Add an tag with crossorigin="anonymous" and set src to either: A custom scheme: <img src="myapp://image.png" crossorigin="anonymous"> An HTTP URL (even from the same origin): <img src="http://example.com/image.png" crossorigin="anonymous"> Observe that the image does not load. Attempt to draw the image onto a and retrieve its data: const canvas = document.createElement("canvas"); const ctx = canvas.getContext("2d"); const img = new Image(); img.crossOrigin = "anonymous"; img.src = "http://example.com/image.png"; // or "myapp://image.png" img.onload = () => { ctx.drawImage(img, 0, 0); try { console.log(canvas.toDataURL()); // Expect base64 image data } catch (error) { console.error("Canvas is tainted:", error); } }; Notice that the image is blocked, and any attempt to access pixel data results in a CORS error. Expected Behavior: * The image should be displayed if it is accessible under normal CORS rules. * The API should allow access to the image data unless explicitly blocked by the server’s CORS policy. Actual Behavior: The image fails to load when crossorigin="anonymous" is applied. The API does not allow access to the image data, treating it as tainted. Removing crossorigin="anonymous" allows the image to display in some cases, but this is not a viable workaround when CORS enforcement is required. Regression: Works correctly on: iOS 17 and earlier Broken on: iOS 18 Environment: Device: iPhone/iPad iOS Version: 18.0+ Browser: Safari Suggested Fix: Apple should investigate this regression and allow custom schemes and HTTP images to be correctly handled under CORS policies when crossorigin="anonymous" is set. If the source allows cross-origin requests, Safari should not block the image or its use in .

iOS 18 navigator.language(s) not working in pwa
Within installed PWAs, the navigator.language / navigator.languages property return a value, that is not according to the Safari settings and defers from the navigator.language / navigator.languages in the browser itself. Example: Safari settings set to "German", returns "de-DE" in browser mode, but within the installed webApp it returns "en-GB". I thought this might be due to the overall phone language settings, but this is not the case. Even is the phone is completely set to German, the navigator returns "en-GB" within an installed PWA. My phone is also not English/British, there is no reason why "en-GB" should show up.

Detecting tabs change in Safari App Extension when switching windows inside validateToolbarItem.
Hi. I'm a developer of Tab Finder (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tab-finder/id6741719894) My problem is that every time i switch from my first window to a second window, the tabs in the validateToolbarItem() are INcorrect on a first call, but when I switch back from the second window to my main window, the tabs are CORRECT even on a first call. To demonstrate it, i recorded a video: https://youtu.be/RwskzrSJ8u0 To run the same sample extension from the video, you can get the code from this GitHub repo: https://github.com/kopyl/test-tabs-change Its only purpose is to log URLs of an active page of all tabs. The SafariExtensionHandler's code of the sample app is very simple: import SafariServices func printOpenTabsHost(in window: SFSafariWindow) async { let tabs = await window.allTabs() log("Logging tabs for a new window: \(window.hashValue)") for tab in tabs { let page = await tab.activePage() let properties = await page?.properties() let url = properties?.url log(url?.absoluteString ?? "No URL") } } class SafariExtensionViewController: SFSafariExtensionViewController { static let shared = SafariExtensionViewController() } class SafariExtensionHandler: SFSafariExtensionHandler { override func validateToolbarItem(in window: SFSafariWindow, validationHandler: @escaping ((Bool, String) -> Void)) { Task { await printOpenTabsHost(in: window) } validationHandler(true, "") } override func popoverViewController() -> SFSafariExtensionViewController { return SafariExtensionViewController.shared } } Could you please tell if i'm missing something and how to see the actual tabs inside the overridden validateToolbarItem call of the SafariExtensionHandler (or in any other way, I'm okay with any implementation as long as it works).

Unclear interimResults Web Speech API implementation in Safari iOS (WebKit)
Hi all! I have been working on a web speech recognition service using the Web Speech API. This service is intended to work on smartphones, primarily Chrome on Android and Safari (or WebKit WebView) on iOS. In my specific use case, I need to set the properties continuous = true and interimResults = true. However, I have noticed that interimResults = true does not always work as expected in WebKit. I understand that this setting should provide fast, native, on-device speech recognition with isFinal = false. However, at times, the recognition becomes throttled and slow, yielding isFinal = true and switching to cloud-based recognition. To confirm whether the recognition is cloud-based, I tested it by disabling the internet connection before starting speech recognition. In some cases, recognition fails entirely, which suggests that requiresOnDeviceRecognition = false is being applied. (Reference: SFSpeechRecognitionRequest.requiresOnDeviceRecognition) I believe this is not the expected behavior when setting interimResults = true. I have researched the native services used by the Web Speech API on iOS devices, and the following links seem relevant: • SFSpeechRecognizer • SFSpeechRecognitionRequest.shouldReportPartialResults • SFSpeechRecognizer.supportsOnDeviceRecognition • Recognizing speech in live audio • Apple Developer Forums Discussion I found that setRequiresOnDeviceRecognition and setShouldReportPartialResults appear to be set correctly, but apparently, they do not work as expected: WebKit Source Code

Safari Extension Not Appearing or Disappearing Intermittently on iPad (iOS 18.3)
I’m encountering an issue with a Safari extension bundled with our main application (F-Secure). The extension is not appearing consistently in Safari settings on a customer’s iPad running iOS 18.3. Below are the details of the issue: Issue Description The Safari extension is bundled with the main app (F-Secure). After installing the app, the extension should automatically appear in Settings > Safari > Extensions, where the user can enable it. On the customer’s iPad, the extension is missing from the Safari settings. It briefly appeared once but then disappeared again.

JavaScriptCore crashed in iOS 17 and iOS 18
Hello, my application experiences crashes related to JavaScriptCore in iOS 17 and 18. I would like to consult about potential causes, to determine whether it is a bug in JavaScriptCore or an issue with my code implementation. First, the crash stack always includes the call to JSC::MarkedBlock::aboutToMarkSlow(unsigned int). In the iOS 17 version, the crash occurs on this line, typically JSC::MarkedBlock::aboutToMarkSlow(unsigned int) + 88. In iOS 18 and later, the stack crashes atJSC::MarkedBlock::dumpInfoAndCrashForInvalidHandle(WTF::AbstractLocker&, JSC::HeapCell*). I checked the source code of JavaScriptCore for both iOS 17.6 and iOS 18.2 and observed modifications in the implementation of aboutToMarkSlow. My question is under what circumstances could this crash occur? crash.log I have attached a crash log encountered in iOS 18, hoping you can provide more effective information for problem diagnosis, especially since there are specific details worth noting near the crash registers. INVALID HANDLE: MarkedBlock = 0x141158000; heapCell = 0x14115bfa0; type = 0 INVALID HANDLE: found 24 0s at beginning of block INVALID HANDLE: block in another VM: 1, block in another VM: 1; other VM is 0x1324b6000 Moreover, in iOS 18.4, due to the implementation of dumpInfoAndCrashForInvalidHandleV2, the message has changed to: INVALID HANDLE 587: markedBlock=0x303518000; heapCell=0x303518fe0; cellFirst8Bytes=0; subspaceHash=0; contiguousZeros=0; totalzeros=0; blockVM=0x0; actualVM=0x0; isBlockVMValid=0; isBlockInSet=0; isBlockInDir=0; foundInBlockVM=0; INVALID HANDLE 606: markedBlock=0x303518000; heapCell=0x303518fe0; cellFirst8Bytes=0; subspaceHash=0; contiguousZeros=16384; totalZeros=16384; blockVM=0x0; actualVM=0x0; isBlockVMValid=0; isBlockInSet=0; isBlockInDir=0; foundInBlockVM=0; INVALID HANDLE 615: markedBlock=0x303518000; heapCell=0x303518fe0; cellFirst8Bytes=0; subspaceHash=0; contiguousZeros=16384; totalZeros=16384; blockVM=0x0; actualVM=0x0; isBlockVMValid=0; isBlockInSet=1; isBlockInDir=1; foundInBlockVM=0; (Further INVALID HANDLE messages follow the same format) I hope this provides you with more information.

Enable iCloud Keychain Autofill & Touch ID support for Chromium-based browsers on macOS
Hello Apple Developer Team, I would love to see iCloud Keychain Autofill and Touch ID support extended to Chromium-based browsers on macOS (such as Ecosia, Brave, or Vivaldi). Currently, Safari allows autofill of passwords using Touch ID, but when using other browsers, I have to manually copy-paste credentials from Keychain Access, which is time-consuming. Would it be possible for Apple to provide an API or framework that allows non-WebKit browsers to integrate iCloud Keychain autofill while keeping security intact? This feature would make macOS more convenient for users who prefer alternative browsers while keeping security standards high. Thanks in advance for considering this! Best regards, Kilian

Add Authorization header to WKWebView
How can i add Authorization header to a wkwebview. I checked https://developer.apple.com/documentation/foundation/nsurlrequest#1776617 which says Authorization header is a reserved http header and shouldn’t be set. I want to set it when requesting a url in wkwebview for authentication purpose?
