According to the header file the outputVolume properties supported range is 0.0-1.0:
/*! @property outputVolume
@abstract The mixer's output volume.
@discussion
This accesses the mixer's output volume (0.0-1.0, inclusive).
@property (nonatomic) float outputVolume;
However when setting the volume to 2.0 the audio does indeed play louder. Is the header file out of date and if so, what is the supported range for outputVolume?
Thanks

On an iOS 18 phone, I use AVCaptureSession to capture HDR with x420 format. The output CMSampleBuffer is HLG colorspace, the propagated attachments contain kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey and kCVImageBufferSceneIlluminationKey. Now I use CAMetalLayer to render the CVPixelBuffer to the screen, but the brightness is brighter than AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer.
Here is my code.
- (void)_updateColorSpaceIfNeed:(CVPixelBufferRef)pixelBuffer {
CAMetalLayer *layer = (CAMetalLayer *)_mtkView.layer;
if (![layer isKindOfClass:CAMetalLayer.class]) return;
layer.wantsExtendedDynamicRangeContent = YES;
CFDataRef ambientViewingEnvironment = (CFDataRef)CVBufferCopyAttachment(pixelBuffer, kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey, NULL);
NSData *data = (__bridge NSData *)ambientViewingEnvironment;
if (ambientViewingEnvironment) CFRelease(ambientViewingEnvironment);
CAEDRMetadata *metadata = [CAEDRMetadata HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:data];
// CAEDRMetadata *metadata = [CAEDRMetadata HLGMetadata];
layer.EDRMetadata = metadata;
layer.pixelFormat = MTLPixelFormatRGBA16Float;
CGColorSpaceRef colorspace = CGColorSpaceCreateWithName(kCGColorSpaceITUR_2100_HLG);
layer.colorspace = colorspace;
if (colorspace) CGColorSpaceRelease(colorspace);
}
Why does the CAEDRMetadata class have "HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:" and "HLGMetadata" methods, but does not provide the "HLGMetadataWithAmbientViewingEnvironment:sceneIllumination" method?
I want to know how kCVImageBufferAmbientViewingEnvironmentKey and kCVImageBufferSceneIlluminationKey affect tone mapping. Is there any documentation I can refer to?
TL;DR How to solve possible racing issue of EXT-X-SESSION-KEY request and encrypted media segment request?
I'm having trouble using custom AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate with video manifest containing VideoProtectionKey(VPK). My master manifest contains rendition manifest url and VPK url. When not using custom resource delegate, everything works fine.
My custom resource delegate is implemented in way where it first append prefix to scheme of the master manifest url before creating the asset. And during handling master manifest, it puts back original scheme, make the request, modify the scheme for rendition manifest url in the response content by appending the same prefix again, so that rendition manifest request also goes into custom resource loader delegate. Same goes for VPK request. The AES-128 key is stored in memory within custom resource loader delegate object. So far so good.
The VPK is requested before segment request. But the problem comes where the media segment requests happen. The media segment request url from rendition manifest goes into custom resource loader as well and those are encrypted. I can see segment request finish first then the related VPK requests kick in after a few seconds. The previous VPK value is cached in memory so it is not network causing the delay but some mechanism that I'm not aware of causing this.
So could anyone tell me what would be the proper way of handling this situation? The native library is handling it well so I just want to know how. Thanks in advance!
We are facing a strange issue where a small portion of our large userbase can not start the capture session in our app, as it gets interrupted with the following reason:
AVCaptureSessionInterruptionReasonVideoDeviceNotAvailableWithMultipleForegroundApps
Our users are all from iPhones, no one is using an iPad. Just to be sure we have set
session.isMultitaskingCameraAccessEnabled = true
but it does not seem to make any difference.
Another weird scenario we are seeing on an even smaller number of users is that the following call:
AVCaptureDevice.default(.builtInWideAngleCamera, for: .video, position: .back)
returns nil. A quick look at our error reports show this happening on iPhone XR, 13 and 14 models. They should all support this device type.
Any help on investigating these issue would be greatly appreciated!

Good day, ladies and gents.
I have an application that reads audio from the microphone. I'd like it to also be able to read from the Mac's audio output stream. (A bonus would be if it could detect when the Mac is playing music.)
I'd eventually be able to figure it out reading docs, but if someone can give a hint, I'd be very grateful, and would owe you the libation of your choice.
Here's the code used to set up the AudioUnit:

if( audioBuffer == NULL ) { [ self cleanUp ]; return [NSString stringWithFormat: @"Could not allocate buffers for recording (ID=%d)", err]; }
return nil;
}
(...again, it would be nice to know if audio output is active and thereby choose the clean output stream over the noisy mic, but that would be a different chunk of code, and my main question may just be a quick edit to this chunk.)
Thanks for your attention! ==Dave

Feature Request: Long-Lived Access to Personal Apple Music Data
Use Case Summary
I'm developing a personal portfolio website (using Nuxt) and want to display information from my own Apple Music library - showcasing personal playlists, recently played tracks, or a read-only "now playing" widget. This is purely for personal use on my website and doesn't require other users to log in.
With Spotify's API, implementing this was straightforward thanks to automatic token refresh. I want a similarly seamless integration with Apple Music.
Challenge with MusicKit and Music User Tokens
Apple Music API requirements
Apple's Music API requires a valid Music User Token (MUT) for requests involving personal library data. Beyond the Apple Developer Token, you must obtain a user-specific token via MusicKit authentication to access your own library playlists, play history, or current playback status.
Token expiration and manual renewal
Music User Tokens expire after approximately 6 months without any mechanism to automatically refresh or renew them - unlike typical OAuth flows that provide refresh tokens. Apple's guidance suggests the device (e.g., iPhone) is responsible for obtaining new user tokens when old ones expire. This works for interactive apps on Apple devices but fails in server-side or long-lived web contexts like a personal website widget.
Impact on personal projects
Displaying Apple Music data on a public-facing site becomes difficult. I would need to periodically re-authenticate through the MusicKit JS flow every few months just to keep a widget alive. Embedding credentials in a public site is insecure, and manual token refreshing is cumbersome and easy to forget.
Comparison to Spotify's Token Model
Spotify's API offers a developer-friendly authentication model. Their OAuth flow provides a Refresh Token that applications can use to obtain new access tokens automatically without requiring user re-authorization. This means a personal app can maintain continuous access to a user's Spotify data for extended periods until access is revoked.
When building a similar feature with Spotify, this automatic token renewal was crucial. I could safely store the refresh token on my server and have my app periodically update the access token. Many developers have created public-facing widgets showing currently playing tracks on blogs or GitHub profiles using this model. Unfortunately, Apple Music's API lacks an equivalent capability, putting it at a disadvantage for personal projects.
Proposed Solutions
I request Apple's consideration for one of these enhancements:
Provide a mechanism to refresh or extend a Music User Token programmatically for server-side applications. This could be an OAuth-style refresh token issued alongside the MUT, or a dedicated endpoint to exchange an expired MUT for a new one. This would enable renewal without a full user re-auth/login each time.
Allow developers to access their own Apple Music library data with just the long-lived Developer Token. Apple could permit GET requests to personal library endpoints using the Developer Token alone, or a special token tied to the developer's Apple ID. This access would be read-only - no ability to modify the library, purely for retrieving data. It could be an opt-in feature in the Apple Developer account settings.
Either solution would significantly improve the developer experience for Apple Music API in personal projects.
Security and Privacy Considerations
This request is not about accessing others' data or creating privacy loopholes - it's about empowering an Apple Music subscriber to access their own information more conveniently. The proposed options respect privacy principles:
The data accessed is only what the user already has access to - their own playlists, library items, or playback status.
An automatic token refresh can be designed securely (revocable tokens bound to a single account with no increase in permissions).
Read-only developer token access could be restricted to non-sensitive data and require explicit opt-in.
Conclusion
I request an improvement to Apple Music's developer experience through either (1) an automatic Music User Token refresh mechanism, or (2) a provision for read-only personal library access using a Developer Token. This would bring Apple Music integration capabilities closer to parity with services like Spotify for personal projects.
I ask Apple's Developer Relations and the Apple Music API team to consider this feature request. If there are existing best practices or workarounds with current APIs, I would appreciate guidance.
I invite feedback from Apple or other developers. Are there known patterns for maintaining an Apple Music user token for server-side applications, or any plans to support non-interactive use cases? Any advice is welcome.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to integrating Apple Music into my personal site as smoothly as with other services, and believe many developers would benefit from this added flexibility.

Hello! I am trying to determine the best approach with AVPlayer for implementing auto-play, that is, playback that automatically starts without user initiation. Ideally this would work for both local and streaming audio.
My current approach is using KVO and the status on an AVPlayerItem equal to readyToPlay to do this, but I was wondering if there was a better property or state to use, or, alternatively, whether this use case may already be handled when automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling is true, so that I could simply write:
player.replaceCurrentItem(with: AVPlayerItem(url: streamingUrl))
player.rate = 1
or
let playerItem = AVPlayerItem(url: streamingUrl)
player = AVPlayer(playerItem: playerItem)
player.rate = 1
and expect the item to be auto-played when ready.
In the context of user-initiated playback, I've typically seen code that makes a button's enabled state contingent on player.currentItem.duration, e.g. in AVFoundationSimplePlayer-iOS. On the other hand, AVAutoWait, which utilizes automaticallyWaitsToMinimizeStalling, does not seem to do this.
As a side note, I am not using an AVQueuePlayer.

I maintain a couple of CoreImage libraries that provide custom Metal kernel backed CIFilters. In iOS/iPadOS 26, the CIColorKernel.apply() method invoked in the CIFilter subclass fails to add the coreimage::destination parameter to the Metal function call:
-[CIColorKernel applyWithExtent:arguments:options:] argument count mismatch for kernel 'FractalNoise3D', expected 13 but saw 12.
I've compiled the code with Xcode 26 and deployed to iOS 18 devices without any breakage, so this is definitely an iOS problem, not an Xcode problem.

I have an app that has a WKWebView for watching YouTube videos. When the videos are windowed the audio seems fine, positionally as well. All perfectly.
When I fullscreen the video and it goes into the native visionOS video player the audio messes up.
It will suddenly sound like it is in your ears, or maybe even just one ear channel, or the position will be wrong. It might be fine for a moment but the second I touch the controls or move the window the sound jumps across the room, away from the window, or switches to stereo.
Sometimes exiting windows entirely you will still hear the videos playing. Even if you open the window back up and go to another screen and open another video, now you hear 2 videos playing at the same time with no way to stop the first one in the background, requiring to force restart the app.
It is all sorts of glitchy. I haven't the slightest clue what is happening here. I am strongly feeling this is a visionOS bug.
I tried using AVAudioSession to change some of the sound settings, and that makes zero difference in behavior.
Multiple testers have also reported this behavior and it has been seen on both visionOS 2.3 and 2.4 betas.
Thanks for the help! This is driving me mad! It is extremely consistent behavior!
I’m building a music app using Apple Music streaming via ApplicationMusicPlayer.
My goal is to decrease the volume of the current song during the last 10 seconds, and when the next track begins, restore the volume to its normal level.
I know that ApplicationMusicPlayer doesn’t expose a volume API, and I want to avoid triggering the system volume HUD.
✅ Using Apple Music streaming (not local files)
❓ Is it possible to implement per-track fade-out/fade-in logic with ApplicationMusicPlayer?
Appreciate any clarification or official guidance!
Hi there!
We have a suite of AudioUnit v2 plugins that have been shipped for some time as aufx plugins, and we are looking into MIDI-related platform upgrades, so we need a way to update these plugins to request MIDI from Logic (and other AU hosts) but avoid changing our AU type and subtype so we don't break existing sessions. Any ideas on how we can do this?
I am currently developing an HEVC player using VideoToolbox on an iOS device.
I have successfully created an HEVC decoder that receives HEVC streams from our custom image capture and encoding device, and it can decode and display images properly.
However, when my image capture and encoding device configures the encoder to output HEVC streams with fragmented NALUs (i.e., an I-frame or P-frame is split and stored across multiple slice NALUs), the iOS decoder can be initialized successfully but fails to decode and output images.
Can VideoToolbox properly decode HEVC bitstreams when a single frame is split into multiple slice NALUs?
Key Observations:
1. Single-NALU frames work fine.
2. Multi-NALU frames (sliced I/P-frames) cause decoding failure.
3. The decoder session is created successfully (VTDecompressionSessionCreate returns no error).
I am trying to stream audio from local filesystem.
For that, I am trying to use an AVAssetResourceLoaderDelegate for an AVURLAsset. However, Content-Length is not known at the start. To overcome this, I tried several methods:
Set content length as nil, in the AVAssetResourceLoadingContentInformationRequest
Set content length to -1, in the ContentInformationRequest
Both of these cause the AVPlayerItem to fail with an error.
I also tried setting Content-Length as INT_MAX, and setting a renewalDate = Date(timeIntervalSinceNow: 5). However, that seems to be buggy. Even after updating the Content-Length to the correct value (e.g. X bytes) and finishing that loading request, the resource loader keeps getting requests with requestedOffset = X with dataRequest.requestsAllDataToEndOfResource = true. These requests keep coming indefinitely, and as a result it seems that the next item in the queue does not get played. Also, .AVPlayerItemDidPlayToEndTime notification does not get called.
I wanted to check if this is an expected behavior or is there a bug in this implementation. Also, what is the recommended way to stream audio of unknown initial length from local file system?
Thanks!
Hey,
Quick question. I noticed that Adobe's new app, Project Indigo, allows you to open the app using the Camera Control button. However, when your device is locked it just shows this screen:
Would this normally be approved by the Appstore approval process? I ask because I would like to do something similar with my camera app.
I know that this is not the best user experience, but my apps UI is not built in Swift and I don't have the resources to build the UI again. At least this way the user experience would be improved from what it is now, where users cannot even launch the app. I get many requests per week about this feature and would love to improve the UX for my users, even if it's not the best possible.
Thanks,
Alex
I am getting high error rates from the Apple Music API. This has been happening for months now, and it is quite frustrating. It is a mix of 404, 504, and random 500 errors. I hit these endpoints all of the time, so it is not like I am hitting a resource that doesn't exist. Why is this happening? Is this a known issue that is getting worked on?
Hi All. I'm working on Single-Sign-On feature in my application to let customers sign into their TV Provider. I need to add Video Subscriber SSO entitlement (com.apple.developer.video-subscriber-single-sign-on) to the app, but I found out that it's a special entitlement, need to contact Apple to enable it for my Apple account. On https://developer.apple.com/account I navigated to Support -> Contact Us -> Development and Technical -> Entitlements and ask in the email about missing entitlement (ticket ID 102478794279). The support team couldn't help me, they redirected me to the operations team. I've been waiting for a few months now but they inform me to keep waiting.
Is there a better way to contact Apple and get Video Subscriber SSO entitlement in an efficient way?
If new photo is added to library and app is not running in foreground or was not opened after the new photo was added but the app is having full access to gallery, can it access, read the new photo - If the app is not specifically a cloud syncing app, can it have this attached function, suppose it is a game app or beauty camera app?

We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions:
The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset).
AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app).
The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect.
Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active.
However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again.
We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation.
It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction?
Test Environment:
Device: iPhone 13 mini
iOS: 17.5.1
Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band
Accessories: Bluetooth headset
We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!
